Walking through the Wilderness

5:42 pm in SPONSOR by staffwriter

Part of the Christian life is going through times of “Wilderness”. When we think of this “Wilderness” period we think of these words: desert, barren, wasteland, desolate, dry, waterless, and we think of being alone.

We all have these times where we feel alone, like God isn’t around, like God doesn’t care as much about us, or that He has left us alone. It is in these times when we feel that way that we need to cling to our faith in God.  Its amazing how when we go through these times of “wilderness” how we act and how we treat God. I recently went through 2 years of feeling like God wasn’t around, wasn’t bothering with me and just had better things to do. There were times I found myself crying out to the Heavens, “God, why don’t you care about me? Why are you staying silent?! Why wont you do something!?” It was in these times that I realized I had grown the most.

Hosea 2:14-“Therefore I am now going to allure her;
I will lead her into the wilderness
and speak tenderly to her.

Many times God will allure us into the Wilderness just so we have time to be tested, pruned and an opportunity to grow!  As we see in the Bible people go through these intense wilderness times. The Israelites wandered in the wilderness for 40 years! They mumbled, groaned and whined and complained the whole way through it. They asked where God was, they whined about not having enough food and water. However, God was taking care of them. He provided their needs, He gave them leaders to guide them through the wilderness and into the Promised Land.

God does the same for us. He never just leaves us hanging out in the wilderness. When we are wandering out in the wilderness wondering where God is many times its insanely obvious that He is with us but we get so caught up with whining, grumbling and complaining that we forget to look around us at the obvious signs of God.  God meets our needs but because we are so SELF focused we forget to listen to God.

As we go through these hard times there are 3 key things to remember.

1. God ALWAYS watches out for us.

“Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.” -Psalm 62:5-8

The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit. (Ps 34.18)

The Angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, And delivers them.
Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him! (Ps 34.7-8)

The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, To all who call upon Him in truth. He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him; He also will hear their cry and save them. (Ps 145.18-19)

For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Rom 8.38-39)

God loves us enough that He would never leave us or forsake us. One thing I love about God is that He can sympathize with what we are going through. He cares, loves and holds us through our hardest times.

Isaiah 53:4-6
Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

2. God is Bigger

I think David said it best when he was but a Shepherd boy going to fight against Goliath. Goliath was HUGE, he was strong, he had the advantage over David. But David declared, All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.” (1 Sam. 17:47)

David knew that Goliaths size and strength was no comparison to God! He declared it, believed it and he had victory over a giant! He had victory over what was threatening him, over what seemed to be a huge obstacle but with God all things are possible!

3. God will never leave us even when it feels like He’s not around.

How can we even believe that God loves us and in then think He has left us?

Deuteronomy 31:6
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Hebrews 13:5
Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

1 John 4:16
And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.

Proverbs 16:3
“Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.”

Isaiah 41:13
For I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.

No matter what we face, no matter what are dealing with, no matter what is coming up against us, God is always bigger, stronger and is on our side! What can stand against a Mighty God like our God? If you believe that, then believe that He will pull you through those times of wilderness, those times of sadness, those times of depression and weakness.

Walking through the Wilderness

Hosea 2:14-“Therefore I am now going to allure her;
I will lead her into the wilderness
and speak tenderly to her.

Walking through the Wilderness

5:36 am in SPONSOR by staffwriter

Hosea 2:14-“Therefore I am now going to allure her;
I will lead her into the wilderness
and speak tenderly to her.

Walking through the Wilderness

5:35 pm in SPONSOR by staffwriter

Hosea 2:14-“Therefore I am now going to allure her;
I will lead her into the wilderness
and speak tenderly to her.

1 John 4:16

and speak tenderly to her.

Walking through the Wilderness

Hosea 2:14-“Therefore I am now going to allure her;

Reaching Teen Girls with Gods Love

5:45 pm in SPONSOR by staffwriter

Love. We live in a world obsessed with it. From the movies, to music, to our conversations with each other, we all talk about LOVE. We all want it and need it.

A few months ago I was sitting at Night and Day Coffee with my friend Amanda drinking coffee, each on our own laptops with our own thoughts and both watching these two young teenage girls across from us and I was totally eavesdropping. The one girl looked at this piece of jewelery for sale and I heard he say, “OMG! It says LOVE, I need this!” As I watched her pine over this bracelet I could see this sadness in her face, a NEED for love.

The last few years I have seen it over and over again young teen girls (around here girls get pregnant at age 13 and many have 2 kids by their senior year in High School) looking for real LOVE and finding it in the wrong places. They look to boys for love. Last night Amanda and I were watching “Morning Glory” and Amanda commented, “Did you ever notice in the movies how these women/girls think sex is the key to love? They have sex with the hot leading man and THEN they are in love and THEN they break up later.” This is interesting…Hollywood is selling women and girls the idea that sex is love. You have sex with a man and he will “love” you. These teen girls see women in movies ALL THE TIME giving it up on the first date or within a few days of meeting the guy (Titanic, 27 Dresses, Morning Glory, 10 Things I Hate About You, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, the Notebook, Knocked Up, Monster in Law, etc etc etc). It glamorizes sex and makes sex look like the KEY to finding true love. Very rarely do they show the downside of sex (Riding in Cars with Boys) such as teen pregnancy and STD’s.

When I was a Youth Leader I saw alot of girls who were being sexually active as teens that were abused in some form. They had either been raped, sexually assaulted, come from broken families with either one parents or parents who just didnt care what they did, or had no dad in their lives. So these girls would look to boys to fill the void. These girls are looking for love and will do whatever it takes to find it. I was watching a documentary on prostitution and how all these young girls in the hood (12-18 year old girls especially). These young girls talk about their lives and how they have no daddies, no one who truly loves them so when a guy (who is actually a pimp) promises to love them and take care of them they jump on it! They want to be loved, valued and protected so much.
In this world love has become such a polluted word. Love has become an obsession. We see it everywhere, fake forms of love promoting pre-marital sex, finding love whether it be same gender or not, commercials encouraging girls to never be satisfied with themselves and to lose weight and do all these things THEN a guy will love them.

We hear Pop Artists singing about sex and love like it is a casual thing, no big deal. Who cares if you get pregnant??? Sex means love and that’s what matters. We see movies encouraging teen drug use, alcohol abuse and sex at age 15. We have TV shows glamorizing sex and making teen girls feel like they are missing something without it. Teenage girls want LOVE. Girls look to boys to fill a void that maybe their dad never filled. They want love. A boy tells them that having sex with him is love, of course they will do it. I know too many teen girls who have told me they regretted having sex in High School because all it has done is make them the “school whore” because they are trying to find someone who will love them when all that really happened was them feeling used and neglected and depressed and dealing with self-hatred.

What can we do to change this mindset? What can we do in a world filling young girls minds with glamorized sex and hollow “love” relationships? WE HAVE TO SHOW THEM TRUE LOVE. God has been really challenging me lately to just love people. Meet them where they are.
God’s love is PURE, ATTRACTIVE, AND FULFILLING. We need to reach the world with that love.

The only fulfilling love is Gods and as Christians we should be full of it, we should be overflowing with it. We need to be lavishing Gods love on people. The world is looking for LOVE. The world needs Love. Christians have access to the most fulfilling love that the world craves. Its not about preaching a message and getting someone to say a prayer. Its about LOVING people to Christ. Showing them this love through your life and making them want it and to understand it.
Love people. We get so focused on just getting people to say a prayer but if they dont have an understanding of Gods love then what good is it?
DONT GET ME WRONG…Getting people saved IS extremely important but its not about shoving the Bible down their throats, its about loving them to the Kingdom. Be love, Live Love.

Teen girls (and boys) need us as Christians to counteract this worldly obsession with “love” with true love, Gods love.

We have to show them. If we dont show them how will they know? We have to show these girls that they are worth more, valued more and loved by God more than any man would be able to give them.

Youth-How to keep them involved in Church

5:45 pm in SPONSOR by staffwriter

Ive been working with youth since I was 17. Ive been privileged to work with some fantastic kids who I have helped and who have also helped me. And after talking with some of them I am realizing that a main reason kids arent wanting to be in church is because they have nothing to do. The dont feel they anyone really cares they are there. They feel like people jsut want to lecture and control them.

Giving your teenagers a place to serve in the church will make them feel like they are needed, like they are valued, that they are wanted in the church. One idea I have is to once a month give the service over to the Youth Directors and Youth Group. Let them run the service. Worship, Sermon, Prayer at the end, everything. These are our future leaders and we want them to stay in the church and serving as leaders to the kids coming up after them. After talking with a bunch of teenagers I have come to the conclusion that the reason alot of teens are leaving the church and not coming back is because:

1. They don’t feel needed

2. They are bored

3. They don’t see the point

4. They “have better things to do than sit around for 2 hours”

5. They have a negative view towards Christians and the Church

Here are some ideas to answer those 5 points above:

1. Make them feel needed! -Get them involved: Youth Sunday, events, let them do the offering, let them join the Worship Teams, let them serve in their giftings (find out what they are), find out those who have Leadership Abilities and form them into a Youth Council. (Youth Council is a team of youth who have Leadership abilities, let them help plan events, lead Youth Worship, help make decisions concerning the youth group, etc.)

2. Make church exciting! No one wants to be bored at church, not just the youth. Make Worship louder! Turn up the sound system! When preaching be animated. Remember youre not just preachinng to 40 year old adults, you are also preaching to 15 year old kids who want to learn too! When you preach, use powerpoints, videos, good examples, make the message on their level and don’t drag it on forever or you will lose them. Also, have alter calls just for the youth. Let the church pray over the youth, let the youth pray for the church members as well!

3. Help them understand why it is important for them to be at your church.Sign them up with a Mentor, whether it is someone on your Leadership team or someone in the congregation. Pray for a revelation of the awesomeness of God for them!

4. Help them to understand that church can be fun! They aren’t just sitting around! When preaching (as I said above), dont just teach to the adults! If you have alot of youth, have a youth church! Many churches are doing this and are getting more teens to come to their churches becuse they have a ministry just for teenagers on Sunday mornings!

5. Help them understand that you are not there to judge them, belittle them or talk down to them. They have a negative attitude more than likely because they have been hurt/annoyed by a/many Christian (s). Your church needs to turn that idea around and give them unconditional love. Accept them as they are…piercings, tattoos, emo clothes and crazy haircuts and skinny jeans. Love them exactly where they are, dont keep trying to change everything about them. Love them right where they are!

Some of the kids I talked to said they just want to do soemthing. Many teenagers nowadays are really into music! Let them form a youth band(s). Find out where your youth are gifted and write it down and find somewhere for them to serve!

These are just some ideas and some tricks Ive learned in my few years of youth ministry. Hope they are helpful!

What does it mean to be a Christian in 2012?

5:42 pm in SPONSOR by staffwriter

America has been known as the “melting pot” country. We have white, black, brown, and tan people. We have mixed races of black and white, black and brown, white and tan, etc. We have a mix of religions. Christians, Atheists (which is an organized “belief” of non believing which makes it a religion of sorts), Muslims, Hindu, Buddhists, Wiccans, Satanists, Catholics, etc. In the past America has also been known as ”Christian” nation.

This “one nation under God” was orginally based on Christian principles of God-fearing men who saw a future for this country, who saw the “American dream”, who saw greatness in its people. A nation supported by Christian principles. America is one of the few nations that has complete freedom of religion. As Christians in America in the 1800′s we had the luxury of going to church and being able to pray publicly without being ridiculed and verbally persecuted. Christians in America were treated as equals to those who were not of like faith. Being a Christian was not that big of a deal to people.  In the 1900′s America began to change its view of Christians. It started with little things like making fun of Christians for sharing their faith publicly, calling Christians Bible Thumpers…harmless really.

However with a woman who was basically just mad because kids were praying in school, teachers were praying in school and she didnt like it. So she decided to fight against it, being the first {documented} person to do so. After alot of debate the Courts ruled that “Seperation of Church and State” means not having public religion in schools. So, Prayer is now not aloud in Public Schools.  In teh 21st Century we see documentaries being made on the “harm” of organized religion (but they specifically point out Christianity), we hear people talking about how Christians do more harm than good, etc. In 2012, being a Christian means losing friends, being jailed for quietly praying at a gay pride parade in Elmira, NY,  being jailed for Street Preaching in Philidelphia, being fired as a teacher for praying with a Christian Student Bible Group, and many other examples. Christians in 2012 are under pressure to leave their faith in Christ and join the world and in this day and age temptation is everywhere.  My problem is that we dont see Muslims going to jail for training their kids to kill anyone who tries to get them to turn from Islam, the papers dont cover all of the underground Muslim “training areas”. America has become a highly tolerant nation for every religion except Christianity. In 2010  it was under discussion by the courts as to whether the National Day of Prayer was technically legal. We have a President who as publicly said that America is not a “Christian” nation but a nation for all faiths. Christian freedom in America is slowly, quietly, being taken away little by little. Since when can a person go to jail for praying on a park bench at a gay parade?

Its no secret that Christians believe homosexuality is a sin, but if we want to sit quietly and pray thats our business. Now, if that man had been screaming “youre going to hell fags!” I would probably want to put them in jail too. I understand to an extent why Christians have such a bad name in America. We see “Christian radicals” constantly standing on street corners yelling and screaming of death, hell and judgement.

We hear about Christians who act as though they are better than the rest of the world. But that is not what true Christianity is. As Christians in America it is hard because of these “Radical Christians” who are making it hard for the real Christians to love people and meet the needs of this country. We are already seeing our religious freedoms slipping little by little. Already the country is being less tolerant of Christians and a day is coming when we will no longer be tolerated.
